About the Clinician:
Frank Troyka is Director of Bands and Coordinator of Fine Arts at Berkner High School in Richardson, Texas. A teacher of 26 years, ensembles under his director have been selected to perform at the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, and the Midwest Clinic.
Mr. Troyka also presents annual student leadership workshops across Texas and at various schools and universities throughout the United States. He is a frequent presenter at faculty development workshops for public school music teachers as well as a guest lecturer and “hands-on” instructor for both students and teachers. He is the author of “Practical Leadership in Music,” a self-published workbook and reference tool used to prepare students to step into their roles as leaders in their high school bands. A member of the Texas Bandmasters Association and the Texas Music Educators Association, Frank has presented numerous clinics for directors and students at both of these organizations' conventions since 1982.
Frank is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmaster Fraternity, and was honored as the 2002-2003 Teacher of the Year at Cypress Falls High School.
Choose your Topics:
1) "Building a Sense of Community Through the High School Band"
This presentation explores how the high school band can impact and influence a community, and how it can help educate the community.
2) "Creating a Culture of Excellence"
In this workshop, I explore ways of motiving students to go from "external" to "internal" by way of individual accountability, including student assessment. This presentation has been very well received here in Texas.
3) "The Private Lesson Program: A 'Grow Your Own' Approach to Development and Maintenance"
This is about establishing and body of private instrumental teachers and developing parameters and guidelines for creating a successful applied music program.
4) "Producing Special Events to Encourage Musical Achievement"
This presentation focuses on four cornerstone events that I have created for my students to help encourage their proficiency. They are an All-State Retreat, Chamber Concert, Solo Recital, and Concerto Competition. I also touch on some smaller events that help supplement the experience of the four focus events.
5) "The Professional We All Want To Become"
The high school band director as seen through the eyes of administrators, parents, students, and the community, and the responsibility that goes with being a public figure.
6) "The Great Juggling Act"
This is all about balancing the many professional responsibilities with a personal life. We'll explore personal organization, parent relationships, effective use of staff assistants, relationships with administrators, and how to put yourself in the mix.
7) "Beyond Student Teaching: The Life You Change May Be Your Own"
The focus groups for this presentation are young teachers (first- and second-year teachers) and college students. Perhaps this could be an additional workshop just for them.
8) "Leading the Leaders"
This presentation explores ways the high school band director can help his student leaders become more effective by guiding and training them to develop their skills as performers, communicators, followers, and as teachers.
9) "Simple Steps Toward Developing the Mature Concert Band"
Process, priorities, ensemble exercises, tools, and philosophy are all explored in developing proficiency in the wind ensemble or symphonic band.
Thank you and we hope to see you soon at the workshop!
Best Regards
Mohli
